Prof. Pius Augustine Ike Obanya

Prof. Pius Augustine Ike Obanya was born on May 29, 1939. He graduated from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria in 1968 with First Class (Honours) in Education/French. He also obtained a Ph.D (Education) from the University of Ibadan in 1973. For his post-graduate and post-doctoral training courses, Prof. Obanya attended the University of Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire (1967), Centre de Linguistique Appliquée de Dakar, University of Dakar, Senegal (1969/70), University of Aix-en-Provence, France (1974), University of York, UK (1975), Institute of International Education, University of Stockholm, Sweden (1976), among others.

Prof Obanya is an expert in teaching, training, educational research, programme development, management and languages. In his professional career, he has worked as a teacher at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels of education. At different times while at the University of Ibadan, he was a Research Fellow, Senior Research Fellow, Professor in the Institute of Education, Sub-Dean of Post Graduate Studies and Director of the Institute of Education. He was the Foundation Dean of Education, Lagos State University. He has to his credit two hundred and sixty-two (262) publications, six (6) books authored by him and 15 other books which he has edited on various areas of Education.

As a consultant or volunteer, Prof. Obanya has organized and participated in several educational and developmental programmes internationally for or in collaboration with the governments of Ethiopia, Zaire, Cameroon, Central Africa Republic, Namibia, Sierra Leone, The Gambia etc., organisations like OAU, NEPAD/AU, UN, AATO, WCOTP, etc. and agencies such as the World Bank, ADB, UNESCO, USAID, UNICEF, UNDP and UNFPA. He was Project Coordinator (Education), World Confederation of Organisations of the Teaching Profession (WCOTP) – Morges, Switzerland (1986-88). He held the prestigious positions of Deputy Director, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) (1988-91) and Director, UNESCO Regional Office for Education in Africa (BREDA) (1991-99). He has also carried out important national assignments in Nigeria as the Chairman of the National Committee on the Education of Gifted Children, Chairman of the Presidential Task Team on Education, Coordinator of the Universal Basic Education Programme and Technical Adviser of the Implementation Committee on Education Task Team Recommendations.

Being an active member of the various academic and professional bodies, Prof. Obanya has held the positions of Council Member of the International Baccalaureate Organisation, executive board member of the International Council on Education for Teaching, member of the International Advisory Committee on Secondary Education to the World Bank, member of Scientific Committee of the Educational Research Network for Western and Central Africa, member of the Advisory Group of the Consortium for Research on Educational Access, Transitions and Equity of DFID and the University of Sussex, member of the International Expert Committee on Membership of Education International, executive secretary of the African Curriculum Organisation, founder and first Secretary General of tehe Educational Studies Association of Nigeria, patron of the Nigerian Educational Research Association, foundation member and first editor of the Nigerian Academy of Education, first president of the Curriculum Organisation of Nigeria and member of the Nigerian Association of French Teachers.

Prof. PAI Obanya has received various honours and awards which include Certificate of Merit by the Nigerian Association of French Teachers, Festschrift by colleagues and ex-students, Induction to the International Educators Hall of Fame in Cairo-Egypt, Distinguished Graduate of the Department of Teacher Education of the University of Ibadan, Recognition for Service to Academic Publishing by Association of West African Book Editors, Commandeur de l'Ordre National du Lion by the Government of the Republic of Senegal, Fellow of the Curriculum Organisation of Nigeria, Fellow of the Nigerian Association of Teachers of Technology, Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Education and Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Management.

He is married and has three children and seven grandchildren.
